Recycled Glass Artists

I am so pleased I have been accepted in the Recycled Glass Book. Cindy Coldiron the from USA is writing a book on glass artists using recycled glass... the book is being published by Schiffer books they publish about 250 art related books annually... it is expect to be available by the summer of 2011 ...

Cindy sent out an international call to artists to submit their best professional and original images of their recycled glass sculpture. I am very please to have been accepted in to this group of world renowned artists... I have been accepted in the craft section of the book. My blue cast boxes, one, a solo shot and the other of multi boxes... below are two photo that have been accepted....

I am so pleased to be finally getting some results that I am hopeful with.

the fluted end is to be cut off in the next few days ... that is where the glass pours in from a reservoir above the casting

still working on my jacks and ball the repaired jack and the new jack and a new ball the ball did not have enough glass so it has a flat bottom which I am okay with from a safe exhibit point of view... I am happy with the shine/gloss of the ball and the new jack... much work to go to get them where I want but I am excited about the progress on the second firing... here is a couple of pics after 9-10 days in the kiln ...

sorry for the picture quality of these shots I just don't seem to have the patience for the camera lately....

my mended jack getting ready to refire now that I have put a new end with ball on it... I used my tile saw to cut off the offending end and to match the size to the new end...you can see the seam repaired with lard and beeswax...called bondo .... I used the "bondo" to smooth out some divots and rough spots too... I put it in the freezer for a couple of hours before making a container to remold the jack and recast..

into the bucket using the lid for the base sculptors clay is the blue stuff I need to balance the jack on skewer sticks soak in veg. oil and cut to the right lengths...I will be able to dig out the sculptors clay and then pull out the skewers after the plaster has set. I did not want to use any other wax as I don't need to steam anything out... I am going to do a burn out of the bondo. I will add a small amount of glass to the reservoir to help the glass move.

this is my prototype with a styrofoam ball and cone for a sprue then dipped in wax and then I made a plaster/silica mold ...dissolved the styrofoam with acetate and steamed out the wax. It worked nicely, now to attempt it in the size I want for the jack ...
the larger styrofoam ball worked out well a lot easier than the first attempt with the beach ball...

the first try with my jack went fairly well but one ballend did not fil...l so I need to make a ball end and recast the whole jack

The jack and ball are inside the plaster molds that are then in very tall terracotta pots with sand in the bottom just in case the molds don't hold and there is a glass flowing accident. the s96 nuggets are placed on top of the molds in another terracotta pot to melt and flow through the sprue to the void in the mold... the large chunk of glass you can see in the smaller pot is a 3 lb glass plug I made to slow the flow of glass allowing the inside of the molds to heat up closer to the temp of the flowing glass .

top pot is the ball mold with 16 lbs of glass in the reservoir... also notice the wire reinforcement at the top of the mold the wire is wrapped around the mold about 1/2 inside the plaster.

bottom pot is the jack with 5 lbs of glass all crystal clear s96 nuggets. the jack had 5-6 layers of brush on plaster/silica then I poured the plaster/silica with sand added to give it strength ... it worked out nicely... I think the result was very smooth because of the brush application.

I am going to remake the ball and add colour to it and repair the jack ...stay tuned...

well I fired the jack and ball in my casting kiln the one I built last summer from a free potters kiln.... 3 zone 36" around x 36"deep. It was perfect size for this project.. I had made the plaster molds before a month vacation and was surprised how wet they were when we came home.... anyway after 10 days in the kiln I took them out yesterday ... for me this has been a very difficult project which I find stimulating for sure. the ball is whole but lumpy from vents pushing against the beach ball pattern... it is too large in scale for the jack ... I also think the ball would look better with colour added to the s96 nuggets I used... I thought about this before but I really wanted to look at 15 lbs or so of clear glass and see how it looked.

I am going to try a different technique for the ball pattern this time I am going to cover a Styrofoam ball with multiple layers of wax and then make a plaster/silica mold . I will "melt" out the Styrofoam with paint thinner and then steam out the wax....I would like to make the ball the rubber red I remember from childhood not sure of the yet. I am making a 6" ball this time so we will see how it looks ...

the jack turned out better than I expected but again far from perfect....after doing some more cold work= cutting, grinding, polishing I will need to fix some of the errors with wax remold it in plaster/silica and then fire it again.

Jack and Ball 2009-2010

hello from Mexico Feb. 3 2009

I have been working on making a glass Jack and Ball (like the child's game Jacks) since June 2009 ... I have wanted to make a glass Jack for many years. There has been a big learning curve on this project for me.... I am using the lost wax method for this sculpture... I made a rubber silicon type (RTV) two part mold from my metal "jack" which I have had for years it is in the metal sculpture I made in University in 1998. there is a photo of that sculpture by our fish pond in the top right of my blogs' opening page..The Jack and Ball are approx. 6"

I made many wax patterns from my RTV mold as each failure taught me about the flow of the wax ( or lack of flow) and trapped air preventing the the wax to flow to the extremities ....I drilled many air vents into my RTV mold and making slow progress to a fully complete wax pattern on my jack. Which also helped me understand the problems I may have getting glass to flow into these areas... Then to get my wax jack into the air with vents, sprues and a reservoir for the glass to sit in... the vents allow air a way out and the glass a way in... It had to be stable enough to to withstand the pressure of 35 lbs of plaster being poured into the bucket. It was a huge challenge to get even this far.. the plaster mold is made.... the wax has been steamed out and the mold is drying while I vacation with my husband in Mexico for a month yeah!!

The Ball

I finally decided after a few false starts that the best way to get a nice smooth round sphere was to use a beach ball deflate the ball to the size I needed ...I added vents to the ball and poured the mold when it set up I popped the ball and removed it.

the ball with many bamboo chopsticks used as vents and wire to hold them in place and strengthen the mold as it's going to have a lot of pressure on it with glass wanting to escape...

When I get home the challenge will be to try and get the mold interior hot enough before the glass flows... then heat up the glass nice and juicy hoping to reach all the extremities in the jack and remove bubbles from both the jack and the ball... I want to fire both molds at the same time. The ball will be 13 lbs of solid glass that will take a long time to cool slowly so that the center of the ball is the same temp. as the outside edge for this reason I think it will be in the kiln at least 2 weeks to one month.... stay tuned when I get back in at the end of Feb. I will be learning more I am sure... peace Janet

PACIFIC NORTHWEST UNDERWATER SCENE

My latest casting is one of two panels of a Pacific Northwest Underwater Scene .... It is made of 100% glass.... most people have a hard time believing that the shells were made using glass, they look so real ...
I am expecting to sell them to a resort or restaurant ....as a divider panel or lobby art....

each panel is 16 " sq... a custom made metal stand will hold each panel so they could be displayed side by side ... I am waiting for our 2 week snow storm to be over before I risk the other panel in the kiln, I don't want the electricity to go out while I am firing my kiln as it takes 5-6 days in the kiln fire this new work....

Below is the plaster /silica casting mold loaded with 15 lbs of glass waiting to go into the kiln

the plaster mold was made of my clay relief sculpture. The clay is then removed from the mold and the mold dried for a couple of months to make it strong and the glass powder is packed in the particular areas that I want defined e.g. the shells, this method is called Pate de verre, then layers of larger pieces of glass are stacked on top to evenly fill in the panel when the temperture inside the kiln reaches 1550 degrees f. and the glass is a flowing liquid

the glass filled mold is then placed in the kiln and I have programmed the kiln to fire for five days to correctly melt and anneal the glass to be a single piece of very strong glass ..... so much fun.... I am very happy with the results of this piece and am looking forward to doing many more.... hope you like it too

Drifting Leaves Project

DRIFTING LEAVES PROJECT

A wonderful British Columbia woman from the Warm Glass website has started a project for next years' Glass Artists Society ( GAS) Glass fashion show at Corning N.Y. in 2009.... she has asked glass artists from all over the world to submit leaves to be placed on a metal tree maker of the tree is from Calgary he does wonderful trees....the leaves are to represent people who have done battle with cancer, some have lost the battle, some have won, and some are still fighting the battle.....after the fashion show the leaves will be auctioned off and the proceeds will go to cancer research... I was thrilled to be part of this project. below the maple leaves I made and sent to Lesley.... I cast the leaves they are approx 3"sq. Lesley added the hardware love what she did with them

Shoes and a bowl in the kiln the shoes have all the extra details I wanted to add, stitching on the boots and blue shoes the pink extras and the polka dot gum boots.

These are the pot melt discs I made by melting bits of glass through a pot onto a flat shelf and then they are melted again over a form to make dishes.

An Aperture pour also called a pot melt is made by melting pieces of glass at 1550 degree f. and allowing it to flow through a screen or pot with a hole in the bottom. the glass flows onto a clay shelf and is then fired again at approx. 1440 degrees f. until it is the size and shape I want... then it is positioned on a stainless steel mold slowly heated to 1220 degree f. until it drapes nicely over the mold. this process can take 5-6 firings to get it the way I want it... each piece is unique and organic .

I have new aperture pour dishes not of the site yet but I will post them soon.... they are very nice good colour and shapes all aperture pours are unique because each is a hand made piece of glass ..... I melt the glass is a pot allow it to flow onto a shelf and then manipulate the glass multiple times to get the affect I want.... the latest dishes have been in the kiln for at least 5 separate firings.

I am a warm ( Kiln fired) glass artist and have been for many years now. I mostly make work for myself and keep or give it away as I find my creativity stymied with the pressure of the market; what will sell, how much time am I putting into a piece, how much am I spending material costs, and the worst is....is it cost effective to change my mind when I have already used other materials. therefore I have chosen not to sell work for many years. Now I have changed my mind about selling as my house has become quite crowded, my studio is bursting at the seams as they say. I have been trying to make my glass windows with texture using multiple layers of glass and firing in a kiln at approx. 1450 degrees F. Lately I have become interested in kiln casting. which allows the window to be 3D and gives me more freedom in creating the work.

my first 3D casting I used Bombay gin Bottles the temp of 1550 f was not high enough you can see the different size frit I used med in the head and hands up to large in the body and then pre fired cullet in reservoir no glass stuck in the clay saucer untreated flower saucer. In the last photo you can see one of the bottle necks in the "base" unemptied reservoir.

More Mammaries= Mega Mams with Belly Rolls

This plaster mold was from a wax pattern I made many months ago in 2006. The plaster mold of the pattern, it has been drying since Feb 1st . The longer you leave a mold to dry the stronger it is. That sure showed up in this on. No fissures anywhere. I placed powders in the areola area then laid frit into the mold to give it shading. I then place sheet glass over the frit to cut down on the bubbles and increase the transparency. It's almost finished I need to make a bead for the nipple ring. The first two torched beads I made did not work out ....try, try again...

nipple ring is on the right in the photo below, it's a biggy.

The glass unframed is 10"x12"x 1/4'"

The Quilt Collaboration

The Quilt Collaboration is a virtual quilt with 64 people from Warm glass website collaborating. Each making a 8X8" glass tile using the theme Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. It will first be shown as a photo virtual quilt. Each person is to complete the project by making tile that is personally challenging. and then photographing the work and emailing it to Toni the person putting it all the tiles together for us. Someday it may become a physical quilt..who knows.. I made an under water scene of the north Pacific coast.
I started my under water scene, witha pattern clay. The challenge for me is the longer slower, casting times ,resulting in getting more bubbles out of the glass and casting thicker and the frit/pate de verre (meaning literally paste of glass) technique. Then I filled the plaster mold with larger frit. I am happy with the result. The shells look real when you are up close and when you touch them.

Serving up Mango Mammaries

I have more mammaries to post. The originals now have a mate (hee hee) to make 5 pairs. I now have started a new set of darker coloured ones.
a quick shot of newest addition to the mam set. They are actually three different colours of brown to black but very difficult to see the subtle changes even when holding them.

Mango Mammaries

Well I went to the market and purchased 6 beautiful mangos they had to be just right size, shape, form and stem ( nipple) structure. I will never look at a mango the same again hee hee. I came home cast the mangos in clay and left the wet clay to dry . Then placed the clay mold in the kiln.

<-shows four empty mango molds ( the dark circle is the pot melt disc that I didn't use) and lip molds on the top and left side of pic.

Then: I then filled the molds with glass frit/shards. The bottom right is a tiny pot melt into a booby mold to see if I could get a swirl in the booby. In the back ground is red glass for top lips, bottom lips mold is at far left edge. I want to slice the bars to use in other face windows or....

any way back to the mango mammaries here is the last pics of the little castings my first .....................

Odd "mam" out the center mam is the pot melt there is a bit of red swirl that I like . Oh I do have a lot of fun..

We will have to wait and see what the big picture ( pun intended)is with these little objects who knows ... not me yet.

well here is my first casting not to say it's art or anything just think about it as a test. It's a two part cast...my hand is an old clay mold that I've had for years, I made it in university around 1989 even then at the beginning of my warm glass experiments, I was interested in casting, but only used it for slumping glass into it at that time. The blue base is my first high fire glass casting.. using a wax pattern and casting the wax in plaster and then casting the glass in the plaster void or negative.
